Chapter 26

Molly Flanigan’s words were still hanging in the air, not fully registered or acknowledged, when Liz Santos came hurrying toward their table, waving a cell phone in her hand and her focus on Cass.

“It’s Danny. He says you weren’t answering your phone and he needs you home. He has to leave for a meeting with his publisher this morning.”

Cass pulled out her muted phone, then checked her watch. And then she slapped the side of her head. “Oh, shoot, I totally forgot. I completely lost track of time.”

“That’s what he guessed. And he knew it wouldn’t be because you were enjoying a marathon run, so he figured you had stopped here for food, knowing I might be the only one who would let smelly runners in.”

Cass looked at Izzy, whose eyes were still wide, still trying to process Molly’s words.

Molly jumped up. “I’ll go. I’ll run back. I should be there with Joey, anyway.”

Liz shook her head. “No need, you’re all in luck. I’m headed to a meeting in town and will give you all a ride. My chariot’s waiting.”

“Not me,” Izzy said quickly. “Two smelly runners in your car is enough. Besides, I need a real run, not just a sprint like these guys.”

She headed back through the dining room and out the patio doors before Liz could insist. She was into a full run almost before she hit the sand.

To a bystander, Izzy might have been running for her life. Or practicing for a marathon. In truth, she was running to a quiet home, not far away, where there’d be coffee on and a welcoming hug. And a chance to sort through her thoughts.

Nell had gotten up early that morning, restless and wondering what the week would bring. A murderer behind bars was at the top of her wish list.

She rinsed out the coffee cup Ben had left on the counter. In spite of the early hour, he’d gone to meet Sam to fix something on the sailboat while it was in storage, then off to Mary Pisano’s B and B to see Ollie.

“I’m looking forward to talking with Ollie,” he’d told her before leaving the house. “Not so much because I think I can help him, but just to give him a chance to say whatever he wants to, without anyone passing judgment.”

Nell was happy to hear it. Ben was far more circumspect with Ollie than she could be, their friendship histories different.

Nell wiped off the counter for the third time, put on a fresh pot of coffee, and sat at the island with her laptop, scrolling through emails and the news.

In ten minutes, Izzy had arrived at her aunt’s door and rushed in, moving through the hallway to the family room, the distance too short to bring her breathing down and her body composed.

Stretching the length of the house, the Endicott family room had been Izzy’s refuge through college and law school and practice in Boston, a short drive away, and it still held that spot for her.
